“Simply different”: 25th German Savings Banks Day in Düsseldorf – Sparkassenstiftung für internationale Kooperation was close to the action

Some 2,500 participants came together on Europe’s largest financial sector meeting in Düsseldorf on 27 and 28 April 2016. Besides Germany’s Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, more than 50 international and German speakers took part in the event and stimulated many discussions.

Show time for an exchange of views and discussions: Every three years, the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe (Savings Banks Finance Groups) invites to the German Savings Banks Day. The Sparkassen (savings banks) and their network partners present themselves as central instigator of Germany’s economic and social development. In the focus of events is the dialogue between the institutions of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, economic and political bodies as well as the public about issues affecting people in Germany. This year, the core focus was on such topics like the period of low interest rates, EU deposit guarantee schemes, digitalisation or big data.

This year’s Savings Banks Day virtually lived up to its motto “Simply different”: In addition to the plenary sessions, three discussion panels focusing on “Simply safe”, “Simply human” and “Simply forward-looking” were offered for the first time. Furthermore, a “Trainee camp” was organized, giving 500 trainees the opportunity to bring forward fresh ideas about how “digitalization” and the “Generation Y” can stir the savings banks.

The Sparkassenstiftung für internationale Kooperation (Savings Banks Foundation for International Cooperation) was present, too, and showed pictures on a flat screen of its photo exhibition “Development Money” with impressions from Ghana, Laos and Vietnam, the Caucasus and Central Asia as well as the film produced for the World Savings Day in Georgia.
