DSGV President Prof. Dr. Ulrich Reuter visits DSIK projects in Laos

From 11 to 14 October 2026, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Reuter, President of the German Sparkassen Finance Group (DSGV) and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the German Sparkassenstiftung for international cooperation (DSIK), travelled to Laos to learn more about DSIK’s project activities on the ground. He was joined by Helmut Schleweis, Chairman of the Board of DSIK.

The visit focused on discussions with long-standing partner organizations as well as first-hand insights into DSIK’s practical work in financial inclusion and vocational education. During a meeting with the President of the Lao Women’s Union (LWU), Reuter highlighted the close cooperation between the organizations, which helps to create better economic opportunities, particularly for women in rural areas. At the DSIK project office and the Women and Family Development Fund (WFDF), the delegation learned about the development of microfinance services and the next steps towards further professionalization and digitalization. Alongside WFDF, Savings and Credit Unions also contribute to providing broad access to financial services. DSIK advises their association, the Lao Association of Savings and Credit Unions (LASCU).

During the visit to the Lao Banking Institute, discussions focused on new, practice-oriented approaches to education and professional training for the financial sector. Among other activities, DSIK supports the institute with business simulations and training courses that combine theoretical knowledge with real-life decision-making scenarios from the financial sector.

Another highlight was a visit to a Center Meeting in a rural area. There, the delegation spoke with WFDF clients and gained first-hand insights into how savings and credit services, financial education and personal advice are made accessible even in remote regions.

The delegation’s visit underscored the importance of reliable partnerships for the sustainable development of the financial sector. For many years, DSIK has been working in Laos to strengthen local institutions, promote financial literacy and facilitate access to appropriate financial services, particularly for women and people living in rural areas.

Laos at a glance

Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia with a population of approximately 7.5 million. A large proportion of the population lives in rural areas, while economic uncertainty, inflation and limited access to financial services pose challenges for many households. Strong local financial institutions and practice-oriented educational opportunities are therefore all the more important in promoting economic participation and sustainable development.
