Displacement and Migration

Financial participation as a contribution by German Sparkassenstiftung

Displacement and migration are among the major global challenges of our time. Conflicts, poverty, social inequality and the effects of climate change are forcing millions of people to leave their homes. According to the UNHCR, more than 110 million people worldwide were displaced in 2023. Countries in the Global South are particularly affected, as they take in the majority of refugees and are faced with immense social and economic challenges.

German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation (DSIK) is committed to meeting these challenges with sustainable and practical solutions. In doing so, it supports both migrants and refugees as well as the host communities. The aim is to strengthen social integration and create economic perspectives.

Economic integration as the key

Through its work, German Sparkassenstiftung promotes the economic integration of immigrants and refugees. In doing so, it focuses on:

  • Access to financial services: Support in obtaining loans and capital.
  • Promoting business start-ups: setting up your own business to generate income.
  • Cooperation with local partners: developing user-friendly and sustainable financing solutions.

These measures promote economic independence, social cohesion and the reduction of tensions between immigrants and host communities.

Educational programs to strengthen business skills

A central component of DSIK's work is educational programs that impart practical knowledge in the areas of financial management, entrepreneurship and sustainable business development. To that purpose, DSIK relies on various formats, including:

  • Digital learning formats,
  • interactive workshops and
  • targeted training.

One special concept is DSIK's Micro Business Game, an interactive Business Game that teaches participants practical entrepreneurial skills and helps them to develop sustainable business models.

In this way, DSIK promotes the skills of the participants and opens economic prospects for them. The combination of education and financial support in particular enables refugees to actively contribute to local economic growth.

Sustainable development through economic participation

DSIK implements targeted projects that aim to have a long-term impact. By empowering refugees and migrants to develop their economic potential, it supports the stabilization of host countries and communities. These approaches promote both human security and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global migration pacts.

By promoting economic participation, German Sparkassenstiftung makes a direct contribution to inclusive and sustainable development that breaks the cycle of dependency and poverty and at the same time strengthens social cohesion.
