Sparkasse Schwaben-Bodensee renews Partnership with the German Sparkassenstiftung for Malawi

The German Sparkassenstiftung for international Cooperation (DSIK) signed a partnership agreement on March 24 together with the Reserve Bank of Malawi and Sparkasse Schwaben-Bodensee. This continues the successful collaboration in Malawi that began in 2024.

The aim of the ongoing project is to improve access to financial services in Malawi. Poor or rural households often lack the opportunity to use small savings to prepare for risks or planned purchases. To close this gap, the German Sparkassenstiftung is working together with the Reserve Bank of Malawi and Sparkasse Schwaben-Bodensee.

This joint commitment of the three institutions will now continue in a follow-up project until mid-2028. The follow-up project will also be funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The new project focuses, among other things, on promoting employment and investment by small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as on delivering financial education through digital channels and multipliers. These topics are supported at various levels — from national strategy to the involvement of associations and educational institutions, all the way to the training of local trainers.

Employees of the partner savings bank contribute their expertise in Malawi

Within the partnership project, the three partners complement each other ideally: The Reserve Bank of Malawi contributes experts and infrastructure, translates joint results into formal decisions, and ensures their implementation. Sparkasse Schwaben-Bodensee acts as the project’s know-how partner and provides its expertise through international assignments of its employees. Already last year, three employees of the Sparkasse Schwaben-Bodensee were deployed in Malawi, where they implemented the “Stock Market Simulation Game” for the first time, among other activities.

As the third partner, the German Sparkassenstiftung contributes its global expertise from more than 30 years of development cooperation and ensures smooth coordination on the ground. Currently, the German Sparkassenstiftung is active in 13 African countries.

“We are proud of what our employees have achieved together with the Reserve Bank of Malawi and the German Sparkassenstiftung,” said Dr. Wolfgang Zettl, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Sparkasse Schwaben-Bodensee.

This year, several employees of Sparkasse Schwaben-Bodensee will once again support the project partner in Malawi through expert missions. These assignments focus on leadership development for microfinance institutions and product development based on an ESG strategy developed within the project.
