Pictures tell the success story of German Sparkassenstiftung

In 2022 German Sparkassenstiftung is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Hence, we are looking back on 30 successful years of international cooperation in over 100 countries worldwide. The success accounts to the tireless commitment of all employees working in the projects. For it is they who are committed to the people on the ground, the local partners, and the common objective of financial inclusion.

In keeping with the anniversary year, an internal photo competition was launched in which all 340 employees could submit photos in three categories. Three photos won, i.e., one photo per category. The winning photos and their story are listed below:

The photo from Kyrgyzstan won in the category "Country and People".

In the second category "Enjoying the Training", the picture from Mozambique won.

The third category "Financial Inclusion" was won by the entry from the East African country of Rwanda.

Category: Country & People

The picture that won the "Country and People" category comes from the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan. Katja Dörning has been working for German Sparkassenstiftung as a Junior Regional Coordinator in Bishkek since November 2020. The picture was taken in spring 2021 in the village of Kochkor in the rural Naryn region of Kyrgyzstan.

The picture shows one of the approximately 900,000 cows in rural Kyrgyzstan. On this land, farmers grow potatoes and keep their livestock. At the end of the field, the mountains of the Tianshan range rise into the sky. These mountains are over 4000 meters high, and the peaks are always covered with snow - even in summer.

In Kyrgyzstan, German Sparkassenstiftung is committed to promoting rural development and access to needs-based financial services. It advises the local partner banks and uses the Business Games to convey valuable know-how for agricultural enterprises and small businesses.

More information on project activities can be found on the project website https://www.sparkassenstiftung-centralasia.org/.

Category: Enjoying the Training

The second category " Enjoying the Training" was won by the picture from Mozambique, which shows a snapshot of an outdoor training session. The picture was taken by our employee Edson A. Madivádua, who has been working as a Business Games Coordinator at German Sparkassenstiftung in Mozambique since summer 2019.

The picture was taken in summer 2021 in Nampula Province, Mogovolas District, in the village of Nametil. It shows a group of members in the savings group of the partner organisation “Mãe Organiza” playing the interactive board game Savings Game. Due to the pandemic, the training took place outside and in compliance with the mask requirement. Despite the pandemic, the staff found a way to continue the project activities to further support the local people.

Category: Financial Inclusion

The third category "Financial Inclusion" shows a picture from the Eastern African country of Rwanda. The picture was submitted by Angelique Ishimwe, who works as an Executive Assistant in the Rwandan regional office.

The photo was taken at the end of December 2020 in the Northern Province, Rulindo District. It shows Hosiane Uwizera, a smallholder farmer and her co-worker (in the background). The smallholder farmer is a mother of two and manages a small agricultural business and a farm.

German Sparkassenstiftung's Business Games have not only taught her valuable entrepreneurial skills but have also introduced her to the financial products available to her in the agricultural sector. In Eastern Africa, German Sparkassenstiftung is supporting a program to promote women in rural areas, of which Hosiane is also a participant.

More information on the project and the program can be found on the project's website: https://sparkassenstiftung-easternafrica.org/.

The numerous submissions to the photo competition will be used for German Sparkassenstiftung's public relations work in the future and especially in the upcoming anniversary year 2022.

German Sparkassenstiftung would like to express its sincere thanks to all participants.
