Ghana: Training for honorary officials of savings and credit cooperatives approved

Within the scope of Sparkassenstiftung’s cooperation project with the Ghana Cooperative Credit Unions Association (CUA), a formal training course has been approved for honorary officials of the savings and credit cooperatives.

A joint expert panel of the project partners has now approved a special three-day training course for honorary officials of the credit cooperatives. This is the first time that customized fundamental knowledge of the functioning of financial institutions and in particular of the savings and credit cooperatives is provided to the honorary supervisory boards in Ghana, the members of the so-called “Loan Committees”. The training caters to the fact that the supervisory board members are well respected within their groups, but in most of the cases they are neither financial experts nor business people. On the contrary, they are often senior church members or experienced company workers.

For the first time ever, the formerly applied method of imparting knowledge from the outgoing supervisory board member to his or her successor through "Chinese whispers" can now be substituted by a formalized, but nevertheless target-group-oriented and sensibly priced knowledge transfer system.
