Sparkassenstiftung is supporting the GIZ programme ‘Migration for Development’. Initially, all activities are focusing on two target groups in the pilot country Ghana.

To ensure they integrate successfully, Ghanaian returnees are briefed on the economic challenges they will face back home before they leave Germany. And they continue to receive support once they are in Ghana. Furthermore, people in Ghana who are thinking of migrating are advised on local opportunities for earning an income.

To prepare returnees for a successful economic start once they return to Ghana, Sparkassenstiftung works with diaspora organisations and returnee advisory centres. It also makes use of business games that use a fun and highly tangible approach to educate participants about the way the finance sector works. In particular, this project makes use of two board games developed by Sparkassenstiftung: the Micro Business Game, which is built around the needs of microentrepreneurs and start-ups, and the Savings Game, which teaches players how to effectively create a savings portfolio and manage a family budget.

The same approach is used for returning refugees and for prospective migrants in Ghana. It teaches them the skills they need to make a success of their chosen economic pursuit and thus empowers them to craft an economic basis for themselves and their families. To implement courses on site, Sparkassenstiftung cooperates with local partners to train Ghanaian instructors, who then function as multipliers by rolling out training nationwide. Furthermore, the project also aims to clear away any obstacles that are preventing the target group from accessing financial services on site.
