Poverty is a major challenge for many people in Armenia. Whilst around a quarter of the population nationwide lives below the poverty line, in the project regions this affects almost one in two people. As there is no access to the gas network in many areas, many rural households heat their homes using firewood and dung. Investments in energy-efficient solutions and renewable energy can significantly improve the quality of life for these households, reduce energy costs and, at the same time, help protect the environment and mitigate climate change.
The aim of the project is to support particularly vulnerable households headed by women in rural areas by helping them invest in energy-efficiency and renewable energy technologies. This is intended to significantly reduce these families’ energy costs. At the same time, reducing the use of firewood and dung is beneficial for the the environment and climate.
Task
The project focuses on promoting investment in energy efficiency. Vulnerable households receive financial grants and technical advice to enable them to implement the necessary measures themselves. Furthermore, the project supports businesses in the participating regions that offer solutions for energy efficiency and renewable energy. This includes training programmes, marketing initiatives and expert support on technical issues, quality standards and business management. In addition, information and awareness-raising campaigns are being implemented to highlight the benefits of investing in energy efficiency, environmental protection and nature conservation, as well as sustainable development.
