Nepal is a landlocked country whose geography is shaped by the Himalayas. The annual gross income per capita was 450 USD, almost 60 % of all people had to live on less than 2 USD a day. Only half of all adults can read and write. After the end of the civil war, the country was still in a phase of building new structures. Public life was not yet completely settled.
The aim of the project was to fight poverty by improving access to microfinance services. The project strengthened the various actors in the microfinance sector - the target group was primarily current and potential users of microfinance services, especially in previously disadvantaged rural regions. By professionalising microfinance institutions through comprehensive training and education measures, the project aimed to create a sustainable supply of microfinance services in line with demand. Low-income households should be strengthened with the help of basic financial education and empowered to make their own financial decisions, thus preventing over-indebtedness. Strengthening the basic financial education of individuals is a prerequisite for (micro-) financial institutions to reach a sufficient number of qualified clients in order to operate sustainably (also in rural regions).
Task
- Strengthening the microfinance sector
- Improving access to financial services for poor and disadvantaged sections of the population
- Education and training for employees of microfinance institutions
- Dissemination of basic knowledge about (credit) economic contexts (financial education)
