In 2023, Gambia has about 2.7 million inhabitants. The majority of Gambian workers are employed in the agricultural sector, which accounts for 60% of GDP. Despite this contribution, many farmers and agricultural workers, especially women and young people, are poor or extremely poor. Only 50% of food needs are met by agricultural production, which offers great potential for growth. However, agriculture is characterized by subsistence production and traditional small-scale enterprises in rural areas with little diversification. Lack of access to resources and education often hinders their development opportunities.
To complement the activities of the existing Gambia Pilot Project, GPP (financing of infrastructure and equipment), the DSIK is providing needs-based training in financial, agricultural and entrepreneurial education for the beneficiaries of the GPP in four regions of The Gambia.
The main objective is to sustainably strengthen project beneficiaries along the value chains, thereby contributing to business growth, creation of employment and an improved economic situation for the communities and regions targeted.
