The first project goal is to strengthen the microfinance sectors of Nepal and Bhutan by professionalising joint institutions. In addition, a professional microfinance institution is to be set up in Bhutan. By offering needs-oriented and sustainable financial services, low-income households as well as micro and small enterprises (micro and SME customers) in Nepal and Bhutan get the opportunity to ensure respectively establish own economic activities. Thus, this long-term project helps to combat poverty in both Himalayan countries.
In May 2011 a planning workshop was carried out on site in cooperation with the two local partners, the Rural Microfinance Development Centre (RMDC) in Nepal and the non-governmental organisation Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women (RENEW) in Bhutan, which culminated in the signing of a project agreement.
The project is financially supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
