In July 2015 the project was incorporated in the project with Ghana/The Gambia to strengthen the credit unions in providing financial services in these two countries.

In 1955, the first African credit cooperative was founded in Ghana. Today, the Ghana Cooperative Credit Unions Association – CUA – incorporates about 500 credit cooperatives with more than 600,000 members. Moreover, some 100 credit cooperatives are on their way to qualify for a membership with CUA.

Within the scope of a savings banks partnership project, the Rheinischer Sparkassen- und Giroverband (Rhineland Savings Banks Association) and Sparkassenstiftung support CUA in setting up an own training academy. By developing individual education and training offers for its affiliated credit cooperatives, the association significantly strengthens the credit unions in supplying the poorer and rural population with financial services.

A long-term expert from the German Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe (Savings Banks Finance Group), various short-term experts and a regular exchange with the Rheinischer Sparkassen- und Giroverband (Rhineland Savings Banks Association) and the Rheinische Sparkassenakademie (Rhineland Savings Banks Academy) is to help CUA develop educational programmes that are customized to the needs of its credit cooperatives. This includes the development of basic and advanced training courses, as well as the organisation of educational measures for a countrywide network of small cooperatives. In addition, the project focuses on creating a pool of full-time and part-time trainers.

With high commitment, CUA and its members have erected buildings for the new academy outside the capital city of Accra. In so doing, they have made an own substantial contribution to further improving their educational offers.

Within the scope of the cooperation project, the role and the functioning of the academy are to be integrated in the strategic planning of the association. This process of strategy development will be supported by the project, too.

In mid-2015, the project has become part of the joint project with the Ghana Cooperative Credit Unions Association (CUA) and the National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions in The Gambia (NACCUG). Thus, the knowledge and expertise provided to Ghana by the German Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe (Savings Banks Finance Group) is supplemented by a south-south dialogue between the two African associations.
