Savings Banks Foundation supports banks with the introduction of the first World Savings Day in Mozambique: Over 11,000 children and young people benefited

Through the first World Savings Day in Mozambique more than 11.000 children and young people benefited. Measures and activities on the occasion of this special day focused on schools in the country.

The first World Saving Day in Mozambique on October 31 was a great success. The Savings Banks Foundation for International Cooperation is very pleased with the successful on-site project.

In cooperation with the Mozambican consulting company ICC the Savings Banks Foundation provided advice to the Central Bank (“Banco de Mocambique“) on the launch of World Savings Day, and supported the 16 participating banks in the implementation process. During a preparation period the staff was briefed about the concept of the World Savings Day. Furthermore the Saving Banks Foundation presented ideas and experiences from other countries and organised a workshop for marketing and product development.

Particular attention by participating institutions in Mozambique was given to the enhancement of financial literacy in Mozambican schools. In a „Training-of-Trainers“ the Savings Banks Foundation and the ICC trained banking staff to become multipliers for financial literacy. The acquired know-how was passed on to teachers.

This broad preparation for the World Savings Day benefited children and young people. Besides teaching units about savings and managing money responsibly, students were provided with basic financial knowledge.

Together with banking experts and teachers they developed and presented dance performances and theatre plays. There were no limits when it came to each bank’s creativity in implementing various World Savings Day measures. Besides painting contests and quizzes on saving there was also an essay contest about the meaning of saving. Authors of the best texts were given their own savings accounts.  After the event all essays were bound and published. The Mozambican savings mascot “Moedinhas“ was of course part of all the activities as was the savings song “Vamos Poupar“ that was composed for the World Savings Day.

A brochure especially developed for Mozambique provided information for 7,000 students. Some banks developed new savings products such as products for young people and home savings products and released them on World Savings Day.

11,000 children and young people were reached by the World Savings Day and were taught about the importance of saving and financial literacy.

Some banks want to continue this commitment and maintain their partnerships with schools. On World Savings Day 2015 at the latest all banks will join in again. The idea is to enhance the concept of saving and to go beyond Maputo and Matola to further regions of Mozambique.
