With the fourth largest population in the world, the island state of Indonesia is one of the most important players within the Southeast Asian region. Economically, Indonesia has developed well in recent years as a middle-income country, but at the same time it is struggling with great social inequality and poverty. Poverty is particularly pronounced in the remote and rural regions of the island archipelago, but access to financial services is limited. More than half of Indonesians do not have a bank account. In the coming years, the demand for microfinance services in Indonesia will continue to grow. The microfinance market is already characterised by strong growth and, in its complexity, poses great challenges for the state supervisory authorities.

In order to meet the future demand for bank personnel in the microfinance sector, especially for the non-commercial financial institutions, which tend to be weaker in institutional terms, the providers of basic and advanced banking training in Indonesia would have to train considerably more people, especially outside the metropolis of Jakarta. Currently, and also in the future, the predicted number of trained specialists in the microfinance sector is far below the demand of the financial institutions. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that the further training offers are often not tailored to the needs of the respective institutions.

The project aims to improve access to adequate financial services for micro and small enterprises in selected rural regions in Indonesia and thus contribute to regional economic growth and poverty reduction. The project objective is to strengthen the professional skills in the microfinance sector and the financial education of micro and small entrepreneurs in selected rural regions of Indonesia.
