Myanmar has opened in recent years and has embarked on a strong growth path. One of the prevailing obstacles to balanced economic development is the lack of access to financial services for small and medium-sized enterprises. The country’s highly regulated banking sector currently suffers from very restrictive regulation regarding the granting of loans to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The aim of the project is to establish a credit department for SMEs within Myanmar Apex Bank, which will make the efficient extension of loans to SMEs feasible.
KfW's SME Lending Programme II (SELP II) in Myanmar aims to provide both financial and technical assistance to selected banks in Myanmar. The banking sector is to be supported in providing sustainable and demand-oriented loans to SMEs. Here, German Sparkassenstiftung is providing support primarily in the areas of training and capacity building.
The continuation of the project depends on the development of the political situation and the safety situation in the country.
