Hands-on consumer protection: The Sparkassenstiftung für internationale Kooperation (Savings Banks Foundation for International Cooperation) presents “Guidelines on Protection of Consumer Rights” in Georgia

The rights of customers and consumers are an important good that needs to be protected. Together with the Association of Banks of Georgia (ABG) and the National Bank of Georgia (NBG) the Sparkassenstiftung für internationale Kooperation (Savings Banks Foundation for International Cooperation) presented the manual “Guidelines on Protection of Consumer Rights” in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on 17 April 2015.

The practice-oriented reference book by the author Levan Gogoladze is supposed to help financial institutions, associations and educational institutions in Georgia to implement regulations regarding the protection of customers and consumers efficiently and to the benefit of the customer. The manual, furthermore, pursues the general goal of improving the financial literacy of both, the population and the bank staff in Georgia.

With the help of examples taken from the practical work of Georgian banks, topics like “basic principles of consumer rights protection and their importance” or “main aspects of financial literacy” are explained and model cases from other countries are given, too.

Within the scope of its BMZ-backed project “Mobilisation of Savings”, Sparkassenstiftung has developed the manual together with the Georgian Bank Training Centre and in close cooperation with the National Bank of Georgia. The recently published book informs about current consumer protection guidelines and gives recommendations on suitable training offers and training material.

The book presentation attended by representatives from banks, associations and international partners was met with positive response: First trainings for bank staff will already be executed in mid-May, with further requests for additional training events to be organised in the future.
