(Overall project term)

In recent years, Myanmar’s economy has become one of the fastest growing in the world. The government, however, is keen to ensure the country’s resources are exploited sustainably during this phase of development. The food sector, for example, which largely consists of small and medium-sized enterprises, is one of largest consumers of water and energy in the country. Investments designed to lower energy and water consumption will not only lead to more eco-friendly production, but also enable the companies consuming these resources to save money. The lack of access to financing opportunities is, however, holding back investments of this kind.

The project therefore aims to promote cleaner – i.e. greener – food production along with sustainable economic development. The project partner WWF is working closely with relevant political actors, including Myanmar’s Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Conservation and its Ministry of Industry, and also with the consumer companies themselves, in a bid to map out the political course of action, raise awareness and communicate the requisite technical know-how. Sparkassenstiftung’s focus within the project is on creating and improving access to finance for local businesses.
