Britta Konitzer: From Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg to Rwanda

Britta Konitzer began her career at Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg where she worked in various management positions until 2010. She now works as Regional Coordinator for Eastern Africa at German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation.

1. In which institution of the Sparkassen Finance Group did you start your career and what brought you to the Sparkasse?

I started an apprenticeship at Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg (LzO) in Oldenburg directly after graduating from high school in 1989, because I was very interested to work in finance.

2. How long did you work for this institution? Please describe your Sparkassen-career briefly.

I worked at Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg (LzO) from 1989 until the end of 2010. After my training as a bank clerk, I completed the Sparkassen specialist course and graduated as a Sparkassen business administrator. After a few years of professional experience, I successfully participated in the training institute course at the German Sparkassenakademie (graduating as a Sparkassen business economist). Finally, I completed a part-time MBA course at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration in cooperation with the DSGV (German Sparkassen and Giro Association). In addition, I took part in various specialist seminars at the DSGV as well as the "Training of Trainers" course. My practical assignments at the LzO were very varied. After completing my training, I initially worked in commercial foreign business and foreign exchange trading. Later on I moved to the processing and consulting of private lending business, followed by corporate customer business and corporate banking. As part of an extensive management trainee program, I got to know all the relevant staff departments at LzO. For the last nine years, I worked as a training and development manager at LzO, where I was able to gain extensive experience in project management, as I was involved in several change projects in a management capacity.

3. When did you start your career at German Sparkassenstiftung and what motivated you to work in international cooperation?

I started at German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation in January 2011, motivated by the desire to use my experience in the financial sector in a more "meaningful" way and to take on a change of perspective. In addition, it appealed to me to work in a different cultural environment. Since 2011, I have been working in Kigali, Rwanda. I now serve as the Regional Coordinator for Eastern Africa, where German Sparkassenstiftung is present in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

4. What valuable experience have you taken with you from your work at Sparkassen Finance Group to your project region?

I can bring my extensive banking expertise and many years of project experience to bear in my work in Eastern Africa, which adds a great deal of value. It is important to adapt good strategies and concepts to the individual needs of the partners in our project countries and to communicate and work at eye level with them.
